Medalists of the Mediterranean Games and Eurobasket
The Turkey national men’s basketball team formed in 1936 as a response to the growing popularity of basketball in the country and made their competitive European debut at the Eurobasket 1949, where they finished a creditable fourth. Nicknamed 12 Dev Adam, meaning the 12 great men, they proved to be formidable opponents throughout the 1950s, but spent the following two decades a little lost on the world stage. Since winning their first ever gold medal at the 1987 Mediterranean Games, the Turkish men’s side have consistently battled for trophies. They reached the final of Eurobasket in 2001 where they lost narrowly to Yugoslavia, won a silver medal at the 2010 international basketball federation’s world final hosted in Turkey itself and picked up their second Mediterranean Games gold in 2013 after beating Serbia. The ever-improving women’s national team have also enjoyed great success in the 21st century, winning a gold medal at the 2005 Mediterranean Games and a silver at Eurobasket in 2011, while also finishing fifth at the 2012 games in London. You can buy and sell Turkey National Basketball Team tickets for both the men’s and women’s games on StubHub.
Watch several NBA stars in action
The men’s Turkish national team can boast about several national players who have played for the NBA over the years, including the Philadelphia 76ers’ Furkan Korkmaz, the Milwaukee Bucks’ Ersan Ilyasova and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Cedi Osman. However, the bulk of the side have remained closer to home, with the likes of Anadolu Efes and Galatasaray often well represented in the starting line-up. Coaches such as former Turkey internationals Ergin Ataman and Ufuk Sarica and Bosnian-Montenegrin Bogdan Tanjevic, who enjoyed multiple stints in charge, have helped to keep Turkey in the top 20 of international basketball federation’s rankings throughout the last decades. Largely scouted from local sides, the women’s team, who unlike their male counterparts competed at both the games in London 2012 and Rio 2016, have also gone from strength to strength under the guidance of Ekrem Memnun. They are also regularly ranked within the international basketball federation’s Top 10.
