Six separate events on offer
Over the years, various races (for both men and women) have made up the track cycling events in the velodrome at the multi-sport games. The sprint races see a competition where cyclists combine race-winning tactics with power, while the team pursuits ensure the four members of the team work together to maximise their combined energy and skill. The keirin event, a Japanese invention that appeared first in 2000 in Sydney, has the cyclists riding around the track while jostling for a position in the slipstream of a motorcycle that paces the race. Team sprints are decided by time trials with each team member taking a turn to lead; the omnium is designed so that cyclists accumulate points over four separate races held throughout a day. This year, the men’s Madison (which was removed from the sport in 2008 and is now back) and a women’s event has been added, making up a total of 6 track cycling events. Watch pairs of cyclists race against each other over 50 km (men) or 30 km (women). What are you waiting for? Track cycling—started out on wooden floors
Track cycling was one of the sports that was showcased in the original multi-sport event of the modern era, in Athens in 1896. The original velodrome looked very much like the modern day ones with the exception of the smooth wooden floors. The beauty of indoor cycling meant the events could take place in any weather. The first appearance of the women’s track cycling was in 1988 in Seoul, and the Games during the summer of 2000 in Sydney saw the introduction of several new events, including the keirin and the 500 metre time trial for women as well as the sprint for men.
