Tokyo Games in summer 2021: Golf—tee it up!

A 112-year wait
Both men’s and women’s golf made the second Games at Paris in 1900, with Team USA’s Charles Sands and Margaret Abbott picking up the golds. The sport returned to the programme with an added team competition at St. Louis in 1904 but following a boycott by British golfers at London in 1908, golf was dropped. It remained a no-show at the Games for more than a century before eventually being reinstated at Rio in 2016. Great Britain’s Justin Rose won gold in the men’s event, with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and USA’s Matt Kuchar picking up silver and bronze, respectively. In the women’s, South Korea’s Inbee Park made the top of the podium ahead of New Zealand’s Lydia Ko and China’s Shanshan Feng. Staged at the Kasumigaseki Country Club
The golfing competition at Tokyo will take place from 30th July–2nd August for the men and 5th–8th August for the women at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, a historic venue in Saitama, which has previously hosted the Canada Cup, Japan Open Golf Championship and Asian Amateur Championship. A total of sixty players will compete in each of the men’s and women’s tournaments, with places decided by the official world rankings, published just a month before the Games start. Former bronze medallist Matt Kuchar is tipped to go all the way at his second Games appearance, but he’s likely to face stiff competition from the likes of Italy’s Francesco Molinari and his fellow countryman Kevin Kisner. In the women’s game, South Korea’s Ko Jin-young and Park Sung-hyun are expected to battle it out for the gold medal, although Team USA’s Nelly Korda will also fancy her chances too.
