summer 2021 Games in Tokyo: Fencing—an ever-present sport
Combat sport fencing has been a mainstay of the Games ever since appearing at the inaugural Athens event back in 1896. Check out the array of summer 2021 Games in Tokyo: Fencing tickets on offer at StubHub.
Foil, epee and sabre
The combat sport of fencing was accepted into the very first Games event in Athens in 1896, although initially only men were allowed to compete. Women were given the go-ahead to show off their swordsmanship skills at Paris in 1924, and both events have remained a staple ever since. The sport has three different forms—foil, epee and sabre—which use light thrusting, heavy thrusting and light cutting/thrusting weapons, respectively; each form in both the men’s and women’s events has both individual and team competitions. Italy top the all-time medal table, having won an impressive 49 golds, with France, Hungary, Soviet Union and Russia making up the rest of the top five. Reigning champions include Park Sang-young of South Korea in the men’s individual epee, Timur Safin, Artur Akhmatkhuzin and Aleksey Cheremisinov of Russia in the men’s team foil and Emese Szász of Hungary in the women’s individual foil. Staged at the Makuhari Messe
212 competitors will get the chance to showcase their sword skills in a total of 12 events at Makuhari Messe, the convention centre that has previously staged the likes of the Tokyo Motor Show, the Wonder Festival and the annual Jump Festa. The action kicks off on the 25th of July with the men’s individual sabre and the women’s individual epee and concludes on the 2nd of August with the men’s team foil. The Fédération Internationale d'Escrime will decide on who qualifies in April 2021 using their official ranking system. Those expected to be in the fray for the medals include Japan’s Kazuyasu Minobe, Italy’s Alessio Foconi and Germany’s Max Hartung in the men’s and Nathalie Moellhausen representing Brazil, Sun Yiwen from China and Olga Kharlan from Ukraine in the women’s. You can also purchase tickets for several other fencing events, such as the Fencing World Championship and two other Games events taking place at the Makuhari Messe, the summer 2021 Games in Tokyo: Judo and summer 2021 Games in Tokyo: Wrestling.
