Tampa Bay Bucs: American Football on Florida’s west coast
The Tampa Bay Bucs were named after the mythical Spanish pirate Gasparilla, one of the last buccaneers, who is said to have plundered the region from his base in Florida in the late 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. Founded in 1976, they play in the national football league as part of the south division of the National Football Conference. Their quest for success was crowned with the win of the American football championship at the end of the 2002 season. Get your Tampa Bay Bucs tickets right here at StubHub.
The history of success and struggles in American Football
The 1970s were a rather turbulent era in American Football as the league sought to expand their footprint across the US. Teams were moved between conferences, only to be realigned again a few years later. This included the Tampa Bay Bucs and led to their name change. The Bucs changed themselves from the American Football Conference West to the National Football Conference West just one year after their foundation before being moved again in 2002 to their current league. Their pursuit for the American football championship didn’t get off well as they lost the first 26 games, which was by then already into the second season. Their first high came at the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s when they won the division championship followed by their first ever playoff appearance and a second division title in 1982. After that, they went into a phase of little success up until 1999, when they won their third division title. It was at the same time the starting point of their highflying period, where they won another three division championships and five playoff appearances until the end of 2007. Their phenomenal run was crowned with the first American football trophy at the end of the 2002 season when they defeated the Oakland Raiders with a blistering 48:21 score.
