Saturday Night Fever background and history
The live musical show is based on the 1977 Paramount-RSO film that was adapted from a book written by Nik Cohn. The gritty storyline is based in Brooklyn, New York where the two main characters, Tony who is in a dead-end job and the ambitious Stephanie, partner up to try to win the dance competition held at the local discotheque. The film’s soundtrack is one of the best selling of all time and features hit songs from the Bee Gees such as "Stayin' Alive", “Jive Talking” and "More Than a Woman". The album soundtrack stayed at the No 1 music chart position for 24 consecutive weeks when first released.
The film soon had a cult following with its electrifying score and dance sequences. In 2010, the Library of Congress stated that Saturday Night Fever was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and the film was chosen for preservation in the prestigious National Film Registry. John Travolta was nominated for the best actor Oscar for his starring role in the film and was one of the youngest actors ever to be nominated.
