The long history of success in American Football
In the early years after founding in 1946, the San Francisco 49ers competed in the newly formed All-American Football Conference before joining the national football league in America in 1950, alongside their archrivals the Los Angeles Rams. They were the first professional franchise in the San Francisco region. After an initial high, qualifying for the playoffs in 1957, it took until 1970 for them to win their first division championship. They then went on to win their first trophy in 1981 at the conference championship and won the national companionship the same year, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 26:21 at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. The national championship win was the starting point for nearly two decades of continued success. Up until 1994, the San Francisco 49ers went on to win the championship final a further four times and since have also participated in a further 20 playoffs. The first decade of the 21st century saw the team struggling not just on the ground but also management level. In 2011, change was insight with a newly appointed general manager, Trent Baalke and head coach Jim Harbaugh. Although many experts expected another year of struggle, the team went on to win their 18th division title and achieved their 24th appearance in the playoffs. The Harbaugh era ended in 2015, seeing the team struggling yet again and it wasn’t until 2017 when they showed a clear upward trend with consecutive wins.
