All the way from London’s Royal Opera House
Founded as a small dance company and ballet school in 1931 by Dame Ninette de Valois, the Royal Ballet was recognised in 1956 as the flagship ballet company for Britain. By this time, it had already been the resident company at the Royal Opera House in London for 10 years. The company put on a production of "Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House in 1946 to celebrate the re-opening of the theatre, which had been closed during the war. Their main repertoire has included famous ballets such as "Swan Lake", "Onegin", "Giselle" and "The Nutcracker", and they have performed these, among many others, in shows all over the world. Still the Royal Opera House’s resident ballet company, it is by far the largest of the four main ballet companies in the UK. You can now buy Royal Ballet tickets on the StubHub website – and if you realise at a later date that you can’t make the event after all, you can sell your tickets on the same site without any problem.
The Royal Ballet – a blend of tradition and innovation
Arguably one of the most famous ballet partnerships to have performed with the company thus far is that of Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, who first appeared together in a performance of "Giselle" in 1962. A year later, with "Marguerite and Armand", they performed a ballet created especially for them by the company’s Founder Choreographer, Sir Frederick Ashton. Both dancers were considered to be the best ballet dancers of their time and danced together for many years until 1979, when Fonteyn finally retired. While the company has maintained its dedication to 19th-century classic pieces, it has also introduced new bodies of work over the years, thanks to the commitment of the Founder Choreographer, as well as the choreographers who followed after him.
