Roskilde Festival: embodying charity
Be a part of the most progressive music and arts festival in Europe. All of this Danish festival’s profits go to charity – yep, 100% of them. More than €51 million has been donated to organizations like WWF and Amnesty International since the festival’s birth. If that’s not a reason to go, we don’t know what is. Enjoy incredible festival features
In 1971, Mogens Sandfær and Jesper Switzer Møller – who were in high school at the time – founded the festival along with promoter Carl Fischer. One year later, the Roskilde Foundation (now Roskilde Festival Charity Society) stepped in. The result? A music festival with a non-profit at its roots and a decades-long focus on humanitarian efforts. In typical non-profit fashion, the festival is mainly run by a force of over 30,000 volunteers. Oh, and there’s music. Artists come from all corners of the world and bring rock, pop, hip hop, reggae and much more to the stages. Big names like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Nirvana have all appeared here, while other line-ups have included the likes of LCD Soundsystem, Black Sabbath, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and Coldplay. What else awaits you? Talks on climate change, equality and solidarity from global activists. Alternative performances. An open, inclusive space for all. For festivalgoers camping for the duration of the event, there are Dream Spaces, fishing and swimming lakes, and a wide range of food and drink available from over 80 on-site food stalls. Food allergies? All vendors list their ingredients to avoid any issues. They also favour organic ingredients, vegetarian and vegan options and, of course, variety. Thirsty? Plenty of beer and other refreshments are available. Traditional campsites aren’t the only way to stay at this festival, either. The grounds also feature caravan camping, sleep-in bus camping, motorcycle camping, tent houses, and even a quiet campsite. All campers practice "Leave No Trace", with the goal of creating a cleaner, greener festival site (and planet).
