The rise of the club
Pumas UNAM was originally a college football club that played in the Mexicos Liga De Ascenso for thirteen years. On 12 September 1954 the Pumas played their first-ever professional football match. Eight years later, they made their way from the Segunda División to the Primera División when they defeated Club Cataluña de Torreón. The team's blue and gold emblem is an homage to the University of Notre Dame – the two brothers who founded the first-ever UNAM team were fans of the "Fighting Irish". In the 1970s the Pumas won their first-ever title in the top-tier football division, the Primera División of Liga MX. Each decade thereafter came with more championship titles and more legendary football moments – this team never disappoints! Aside from their unique style of play and numerous championship wins, the Pumas have a special youth development programme that is very well known and has primed some of the most talented international football players on the planet.
