NCAA Division III Football History
Division III Football began in 1973 and represents a high level of football. The differential factors between Division III Football and the other two divisions are mainly financial. Division III schools do not offer any athletic scholarships to their students. The idea behind this is that players who play for these schools are less driven by money, media, and fame, and play for the love of the sport. Division III is the largest division in the NCAA, representing approximately 40% of the total membership. This leads to healthy competition and some memorable games between schools.
It is extremely rare for Division III teams to play teams from Division I due to the difference in size between defensive players. Whereas Division I teams can offer financial incentives for larger players to the lineup in the defensive line, Divison III teams have no such power, posing a potential danger in a contact sport. However,
occasionally teams play inter-division matches, with the most recent victory for a Division III team over a Division I team occurring in 2015 when Maryville College defeated East Tennessee State University by 28 points to 21. While drafts concentrate mainly on Division I players, Divison III players have often made it to the NFL. The highest ever draft pick from Division III occurred in the 2015 NFL Draft when Ali Marpet of Hobart College was drafted in the 2nd round at 61st overall by the Tampa Bay Buccanneers.
