Rock producer Butch Vig, Steve Marker and Duke Erikson founded Garbage in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin. Vig and Marker were already known for their production work; Vig famously produced one of the most iconic albums of all time, Nirvana's Nevermind and the duo has remixed notable acts such as Nine Inch Nails, U2 and Depeche Mode. It was their remix work that inspired them to start a band of their own where the remix concept would allow them to experiment with every sound available in the popular music genre. A friend commented that early master tapes, probably for "Vow", sounded "like garbage" and the band had their name.
Vig, Marker and Erikson soon decided that they'd sound better with a female vocalist. They didn't want a pop singer with a high, sweet voice and, after seeing a video of the band Angelfish, they decided to approach their vocalist, Edinburgh-born Shirley Manson. Her first audition didn't go well but, luckily, Manson approached the band again later to request a second audition. Garbage's first studio album, Garbage was released in 1995. It entered the UK charts at No. 12 and debuted at No. 5 in Australia. "Queer" was released as a single and Garbage embarked on a year-long tour to promote the album. "Stupid Girl" is possibly the best-known single from the album and the remix by Todd Terry enjoyed intensive airplay.
Garbage - an incredible live band
The band went on to release a host of highly-acclaimed albums including Version 2:0 in 1998, Bleed Like Me in 2005 and Strange Little Birds in 2016. Hit singles include "Milk", "Special", and "Cherry Lips(Go Baby Go)" which received Gold ARIA certification in 2001. Garbage also wrote and recorded the soundtrack for the James Bond film The World is Not Enough in 1999.
