Osasuna was founded in 1920 in Pamplona, Spain. Twelve years later they entered the Segunda División. After three seasons, they were admitted to the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, informally called "La Liga".
In the 1985–86 season the team qualified for the Cup for the first time, and in the 1990–91 Cup they reached the third round. They unfortunately finished last in the 1993–94 edition, leading them to spend six seasons in the second tier. They were able to turn it around in 2005, though, when they reached the Copa del Rey final. That same year, the team played their 1,000th game in La Liga! They also came in fourth place in the Champions League qualifiers the following year. The fact that Osasuna and Sevilla were neck-and-neck created suspense that held fast until the final day of the tournament made for truly legendary football moments. Both teams ended up with identical points, but Osasuna came out on top thanks to their head-to-head record. To the dismay of the team and their fans, though, they didn’t qualify for the Champions League group phase. The next several years brought tremendous success for the club, but by 2008 they were in 18th place and demoted to the Segunda División. In the 2015–16 season they managed to win their playoff games and move back up the ranks to La Liga. It was only one season later that they found themselves back in the second tier.
A comeback for the books
In 2019, Osasuna finally made it back into La Liga for the next season, and ended as the 2018-19 Segunda División champs.
