AFC Ajax history
Amsterfamsche Football Club Ajax (or, simply, Ajax) was founded in March 1900, achieving promotion to the Dutch top division in 1911. AFC Ajax have won 33 Eredivisie titles, most recently in 2015, and 18 KNVB Cup titles, making them the most successful club in the Netherlands. Yet, it's Ajax's footballing pedigree that sets them apart from many of their Dutch and European rivals. The side has won the European Cup/Champions League four times. However, three of these titles came during their 'golden period' when Johan Cruyff was in his prime, before his move to Barcelona. AFC Ajax won three consecutive European titles (1971-73), earning them the right to permanently keep the trophy (one of only five teams to be awarded this honour). In more recent memory, Ajax won the 1995 Champions League, defeating AC Milan in the final and competed in the 2017 Europa League Final against Manchester United, eventually losing 2-0.
