The club was founded in 1924 by Greek refugees fleeing Constantinople (Istanbul) following the Greco-Turkish War. The club is now one of the most supported teams in Greece and also one of the most successful. In total, AEK Athens has won 31 Greek titles (most recently in 2017-18), and also all other silverware that can be won in Greek football - 12 Championships, 15 Greek Cups, 1 League Cup and 3 Super Cups. AEK Athens has also established itself as a competitive force in Europe, having competed in all of the competitions. The club's best result in the Champions League came in the 1968-69 season when they reached the Quarter-finals before losing to Czechoslovakian side Spartak Trnava.
